The Hummingbird

There are countless legends or stories about hummingbirds. Since hummingbirds are only found in the western hemisphere, all of the stories are from the Americas and surrounding areas.

There are stories going back to the Mayans. There are stories from Puerto Rico as well. We don’t often hear of legends from there. Of course most native american tribes have stories about the hummingbirds.

Since we aren’t here to tell the stories, I’ll just say that the ones that I have read are very beautiful. As you can imagine for such a beautiful bird, it would have to be a beautiful story.

Most native people believe that the hummingbird is a messenger between the spirit world and the natural one. Hummingbirds are the bringers of joy.

Hummingbirds represent life and love. Hummingbird medicine people are usually happy people, seeing the joy in life. Giving or receiving items depicting hummingbird is a gift of love and appreciation.

A hummingbird feather is said to open the heart. Hummingbird people saw devotion to loved ones as well as to their tasks.

Hummingbirds symbolize beauty, timelessness, and healing. Some native tribes believe they are time stoppers. Since they can hover in one spot they seem to be stopping time, since they are fluttering their wings very quickly without actually moving from the spot.

Hummingbird people bring joy and beauty to the world. They encourage us to open ourselves to others and see the beauty in each of us.
