The snake
The snake may be one of the most misunderstood reptiles that people use as a tattoo.
Many of us feel revulsion when we see a snake. For others the snake suggests poison, or evil. In the Bible, the snake or serpent suggests the devil or ultimate evil.
For Native Americans this is not the case. The snake can have different meanings depending on its appearance. A snake coiled in sleep may be fairly harmless. While a snake showing its fangs is a much more threatening pose.
A snake with fangs exposed, or ready to attack may mean you need to prepare to defend your beliefs or way of life. While a coiled snake may mean an awakening. This doesn’t mean awakening as in waking in the morning from sleep. Rather a spiritual awakening from a spiritual sleep.
A snake shedding its skin is representative of a symbolic death. This does not necessarily mean an actual death. Rather a death before a rebirth.
The shedding of the snake skin is symbolic of the individual moving away from bad habits or thought pattern. As a symbol of this renewal snakes do not need to eat in order to regenerate their body, they can lay motionless on the ground and absorb the heat from the sun.
The snake people must be in balance with all the elements including the Earth before the snake can enter your life. Snake spirit teaches the people to see into others hearts to help them on their spiritual journey.
Snake people, attributes include life, death and rebirth, fertility, wisdom, poison and healing.
Some native peoples believe that snake medicine is rare. The power of the snake is creative. Certain tribes believe that shaman are snake medicine people.
