The Coyote

The coyote is known as the trickster, this doesn’t always mean he’s playing tricks. Sometimes it means we are being too serious about our own lives. So coyote comes to teach us to laugh at ourselves.

Not all native tribes refer to the coyote is the trickster Many tribes consider him as both sides such as clever and foolish, guile and innocence,stealth and intelligence. The coyote is certainly cunning and clever. Coyote shows us not to be foolish and teaches us to be careful and to learn to walk the sacred good road.

Some tribes consider coyote to be a messenger. Others say he impersonates the creator, as old man Coyote took a hand full of mud to make the people.

The Shoshone believe that coyote brings death, such as harsh winters, floods or illness. When what he really brings is a new beginning.

Coyote medicine people make great caregivers, they give everything to those they care for. Sometimes they need to be reminded to take care of themselves as well.

The Navajo people never kill coyote, because they believe he came to the physical world with first man and woman. Coyote is a bringer of life.

Coyote is considered a powerful hunting, totem or fetish. Coyote has the ability to find things, and would bring sacred things to the people.

Coyote tells us to be careful of our actions for what we do to others will be done to us. We must be mindful of the consequences of what we do. Learning from our mistakes is the way to set us free.

Some of the attributes of Coyote are ingenuity, transformation, intelligence, playfulness, skill and resourcefulness.

As with all tattoos, be sure to tribe you wish to honor, or the clan, you are related to, would find honor in wearing coyote.
