The Stag (Deer)

Many cultures revered the stag or deer. Since a stag is a male deer, from here on I will just refer to it as a deer. Although some considered the stag as the lord of the forest. It’s unclear if they considered the doe, or female deer as the lady of the forest.

Some of the attributes associated with the deer are compassion, gentleness and caring, peace and seeker of adventure.

The Druids believed the deer were prophesiers, being able to foretell the future. Often people had visions when they were near deer.

The deer also were symbols of undisciplined vigor. With the ability to defeat evil, and renew youth.

The deer searching for water is often compared to man searching for God. In ancient Greece the deer was the symbol of the celibate dedicating his life to God.

It is hard to find an attribute that isn’t associated with the deer in some way. Deer have a connection to the forest and the earth. Deer are proud animals with a keen sense of smell, with swiftness to escape danger, as soon as it is sensed.

Deer people are strong and independent. Many have psychic abilities and are sensitive to everything around them. The are noble, graceful and proud.
Deer medicine people are capable of unconditional love. For themselves and others. This is the way to break down barriers to bring wholeness to each individual.

In ancient times it was believed that deer could draw snakes out of their holes, then trample them to death with their hooves.
